The day has finally arrived (in the US, anyway). I saw the movie yesterday, first showing of the day, and all I can say is WOW!!! This has been well worth the wait! Joss did a fantastic job bringing the story to the big screen with everything you'd expect from "Firefly"--action, romance, tears, laughter! I'm going again tomorrow because this movie is definitely worth multiple viewings. Thank You, Joss and the cast for doing such a wonderful job! You're all amazing!

Let's hope we get at least that 15 million! Serenity took $4.2 million on friday comming second for overall takings in the us just behind flightplan that got $4.4 mil... but serenity was operning in 1200+ less screens than flightplan and consequently the per screen average was way higher $1900 (rounded down) compared to flightplans $1200 ...if that stays high it means it will stay in more screens for longer if not open in even more screens! >> someone said this at another forum... I like his way of thinking (and calculating) so basically, Serenity WAS the best movie on friday

I just read that "Serenity" has taken in $10.1 million dollars, which I don't believe counts what it takes in today and has held the number 2 spot at the box office!!! Not bad for a movie based on a TV show that got cancelled after just 11 episodes!!! What really makes me happy is the other movie that opened on the 30th, "Into the Blue", is 5th, way behind "Serenity" which just goes to show that it takes more than some hunky young stars in bathing suits to get people in the theatre!!! Not that I wouldn't mind seeing Nathan in his bathing suit in a film...or in his birthday suit, for that matter!

I just checked the numbers and "Serenity" has dropped to 8th! It's still doing well with $16 million dollars grossed so far; in fact, on average, it's making more money per theatre than "Corpse Bride" but I'd like to see it back up in the top 5 this weekend. Has anyone heard what the numbers are for Canada, Australia, the UK, and any of the other countries where the movie has opened?

I'm just hope we're gonna make it to the sequelnr (80 million) although I heard that they're deciding this weekend if there's gonna be a sequel or not... So I got myself all worked up, feeling helpless cause I can't spend every free moment in the theatres to see Serenity yet *cries* 9 november is sooo far away...

I guess Universal figures that the film has opened in the markets where it's going to make the most money and if the numbers are good there, it'll be worth investing in the sequel. "Entertainment Weekly" called it a "weak showing" at just $10.1 million and failed to capitilize on it's "rabid fan base" but the fact that it still took 2nd place is just a reflection of how badly the movie business has been in general over the last few months. It's not like it was at the bottom of the heap. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for good news about the sequel if they are indeed making that decision this weekend!

There's a thread on the Browncoat site in which the starter of the thread said a friend of his, who is a movie editor, saw Joss last weekend at a party and he was very upbeat. When he mentioned that "Serenity" had only taken in $10.1 million dollars his friend pointed out that considering this is a movie not only based on a cancelled TV series but, by Hollywood standards, doesn't have any "major, A-list stars", that's extremely good. He also pointed out that many films that don't do great in the US do really well overseas, especially those in the sci-fi genre because American viewing audiences tend to see sci-fi as a "kiddie" genre. He also said that, unfortunately, intelligent movies are often overlooked because alot of people don't want to have to think or be challenged when they go see a movie. I'm still very hopeful for a sequel and I'll continue to do so unless I see an official statement to the contrary!

And if they say right now 'no sequel', they can still change their minds once it goes in theatres worldwide, and the dvdsales... I thought I heard 80 million was the standard, we can still make that!
