I'd like to ask everyone to say a prayer for New Orleans and the Gulf Coast over here in the States; they're about to get hit by Katrina, a category 4 to 5 hurricane (5 is the strongest). This storm will bring storm surges of about 25 feet and possible wind gusts of over 200 mph; since New Orleans is already below sea level, this type of flooding will be devastating, making the loss of historical sites and property very likely, not to mention the potential loss of life for those who won't or can't leave the city. I hope and pray that Katrina will either turn harmlessly out to sea or weaken considerably before making landfall; I hope everyone here will join me in that prayer.

Unfortunately, things look really bad. New Orleans, which looked at first like it might escape the worst of it, is now flooding and several casualties have been reported. The city will probably have to be evacuated completely because of the danger of disease from sewage and the bodies of victims that are literally floating in the streets. Martial law has been declared in most areas because of wide-spread looting and people have already started price gouging to make a profit off the disaster. Biloxi, MS got the worst of it; over 100 dead already and the death toll is rising. So please pray for the survivors, the families of the dead and missing, the rescue teams helping both the human and animal victims get to safety, and the all those who will be involved in the massive clean-up and rebuilding to come.

Yep, alligators swimming in the sewage contaminated streets--not very pleasant. I read a story about 2 elderly women who were trapped in their car in the flood waters and two gators were swimming around the vehicle. Luckily, a good samaritan stopped, waded thru the waters, gators and all, and got the women out and into his truck and drove to safety. They also had problems with people who were trying to leave after the levy broke being carjacked by people who didn't have transportation of their own so they could get out. Now, if it was me, if people just asked for a ride, I'd say "Hop in!" There wouldn't be alot of room because I'd have 2 cat carriers in the car but I'd cram as many people as I could into my little Chevy Cavalier; heck, they could strap themselves to the roof if they wanted but if someone tried to carjack me and it was a matter of me or them getting to safety, I'm sorry, but they'd be a hood ornament! Gas prices are also shooting up; it was $2.99 a gallon when I filled up last night and even though I had just over half a gallon left in my car, it still cost me $27 but like I keep telling people, it could be worse. At least I have a home to come back to with running water and electricity, food in the frig, and my cats are safe and sound. All things considered, I think I'm very lucky!
