We've all heard these stories at one time or another. The ones told in hushed tones around a campfire, passed down from one generation to another, sometimes prefaced with something like, "This really happened to my co-worker's cousin's best friend's mother." What are some of the ones you remember? Here's one from my days as a Girl Scout. We used to go to overnight camp at a place called Camp Darden, just outside a little town called Sedley, VA. The camp counselors there told us the story of Ol' July. Ol' July was a slave who was hanged because, depending on what version was told, because he ran away and the slave masters wanted to set an example for those who had thoughts of doing the same or because he participated in the Nat Turner slave rebellion, which happened in the same area, and killed the family of his master. The tree where he was hanged is on the grounds of the camp and he was buried nearby; there was even a cement marker with his name on it but that was probably put there by camp caretakers to make the story more believeable. Now his ghost wanders the camp, angry at the injustice he suffered and seeking revenge. Some people swear they have seen his "ghost light" moving erractically thru the trees and heard his moans late at night. By the way, my mom and step-dad live across the street from the camp and their home is built on the site of an old plantation called Jericho Plantation. When we first movied in about 25 years ago, we did have some unusual things happen but I'll save those stories for a Halloween thread!
