Browncoat Hurricane Relief fund !!!

The New England Browncoats have just created a charity donation site for those in need after the effects of Hurricane Katrina.

All money will go directly to the American Red Cross National Disaster Relief Fund. The website JustGiving.com funnels all money to the charity with no middleman.

We have set up a goal of $500.00. If you want to make a donation, you can visit the donation site at www.justgiving.com/pfp/NEBHurricaneRelief

Be sure to tell your friends and family about this site.

It's definitely not too late--this is going to be an ongoing operation for many weeks to come! My hometown went thru 2 small hurricanes that didn't do nearly the damage that Katrina did and it took months to clean up. I just want to say thank you to the New England Browncoats for doing this and to Adam Baldwin for his generosity; the world needs more people like you guys! I just hope the rising gas prices don't deter people from giving.

$7,714.00 (Saturday) + $4,000.00 (Friday's exact count was $3,974.00; to which I added $26.00) = $11,714.00.

The kindness and generosity exhibited these past 48 hours by fans of FF/Serenity and others who have joined in this effort has been one of the most profoundly heart-warming and inspirational experiences of my life.

I cannot possibly express the magnitude of my appreciation to all those who have taken the time to stop by to contribute and offer words of encouragement and sympathy for those in the disaster areas. May God bless you all.

That's fantastic! You know, everytime the media does stories about sci-fi fans, they tend to put a spin on it that makes us look like a bunch of weirdos with no concept of reality and who care more about fictional characters than real people. I wish they would pick up on this and efforts by other sci-fi fan groups to help the victims of Katrina.

I asked one of the pesonnel managers at work if I could bring my massage chair up to Wal-Mart one day and do chair massages for donations; he has to clear it with the manager but I'm hoping they'll let me do it. I've felt so helpless over the last week and really want to do more to help the relief effort. Doing this will not only give me some practice outside the classroom but would hopefully raise a fair amount of money because who doesn't like a good back/shoulder rub! ;D

The support Adam put into this is overwhelming. Not to mention the generosity and willingness to help of the Browncoats. Its an amazing figure, but it doesnt have to stop there. If your able, if you can spare it then please give. Its never too late. The clean up will last months, if not years. Weather your donation goes to feeding a family, medicating the sick or helping to re build homes it will all help.

Another way to help besides financial donations is donations of supplies. The United Methodist Committee On Relief (UMCOR) is putting together "Flood Bucket" kits which consists of 5-gallon plastic buckets with various cleaning supplies like bleach, gloves, dust masks, etc., to distribute to resisdents to help in the clean-up process. They probably also need supplies for their "Health Kits" which contain personal hygeniene items. Go to the link below and under "Get individual kits" click on "webpage" for either the Health kit and/or Flood Bucket to get a list of supplies. The site also has packaging and mailing instructions or contact a Methodist church in your area to find out if they're taking donations of supplies for UMCOR, which I'm sure they are. In fact, you may want to try the church first because many times, each church in the district will be responsible for taking in a certain item for example, one church will ask for gloves, another bleach, another buckets, etc., then they're all shipped at once to a central distribution area to be put together and given out to people. Or get together with friends and/or co-workers and put together a Flood Bucket and ship to the central distribution center. Anyway, here's the link if anyone is interested:
